Bampfield, John

John Bampfield was born in 1947 in Kidderminster, the carpet manufacturing capital of the West Midlands. At School he enjoyed art and was encouraged by his art master, 'Abe' Moonan and by his successor, the painter and sculptor, J. Lanson. After leaving school he worked for a short time as a carpet salesman, for a carpet wholesaler in London.

In 1968 he moved to Cornwall, met his future wife Wendy. John began painting in 1969 and continued to live and work in Cornwall. Over the last twenty eight years John has painted constantly.

Most his work has been sold through commercial galleries in the U.K. where it has been more or less on permanent show. John's early work was influenced by other commercial painters Les Spence (Jason), Ben Maile.'Passeur-', Eric Mason, and Barry Leighton Jones as well as Turner and The Impressionists, whose use of light and colour inspires him. Now he also enjoys painting sun balked landscapes and sun-lit harbours in bold bright colours, as well as the rain soaked streets of Victorian and modern England.

Collectors include the late Patricia Phoenix, the actress and the late Paul Getty, as well as the very much alive, Phillip Schofield, television presenter and actor.
