Henry Wilkinson

Henry Wilkinson, ARE, ARCA was born into an artistic family. 1921. An engraver very often of sporting subjects. Born in Bath in Somerset, the son of H.R. Wilkinson His father studied under Ruskin and was head of the Winchester College of Art. Henry followed his early studies at Winchester, at the Royal College of Art in painting where he received his diploma in 1945. He studied engraving under Robert Austin, R.A., and Malcolm Osbourne, M.A. & M.B.E. Wilkinson won scholarships to study in Germany, France and Italy. After the war he was elected to the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers & Engravers, ultimately as Councillor. For many years he was professor of Engraving at the City Guilds of London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was elected ARE in 1946. After the death of his mentor, George Vernon Stokes, he began producing his limited edition drypoints of hunting dogs & other sporting subjects. He initially learned to engrave through training under gunsmiths, as a youngster. He's regarded as one of the finest sporting art engravers in the world. He originates, engraves & finishes all phases of his work, including making his own inks.
